PROJECT: Fallen Trees - 17th December 2025

The canal is a very dynamic environment and it changes from day to day. We came across this fallen tree (see pictures below) that was blocking most of the towpath, the previous day it was all fine. It was fortunate that it had occurred around the same time as we were due out. If you do come across anything that you feel needs urgent attention, please get in contact using the details on the contact page of this site or as below.

Fallen Tree

This rotten tree was encased in Ivy, and the weight of it finally gave way to gravity and ended blocking most of the towpath making it very difficult for the public to pass safely.

All cleared up

It took a combination of secateurs to trim back the Ivy, to get to the main trunk... then a handsaw to reduce the trunk to a manageable size, about 45 minutes effort in total for three volunteers. A job well done 👍

We would like to recognise all of the public who offered their thanks to the team as they pass by, your support is really appreciated. 😊

PROJECT: Wooden Bridge - 23rd July 2025

A group of 9 volunteers from the Market Harborough Canal Towpath Adoption Group spent a very productive morning working on the wooden foot bridge linking the towpath to the wharf.

Sanding, wire brushing and applying a waterproof preservative to protect it from weathering, extend its lifespan, and improve its appearance. A few small scale issues were identified and relayed to CRT for action.

Many thanks to the Canal & Rivers Trust(CRT) for supporting the group with materials and paint brushes.

PROJECT: Bollards - 30th April 2025

A great team of volunteers from the Market Harborough Canal Towpath Adoption Group Towpath assembled at the visitor moorings near to the wharf to tackle Project Bollards!

Painting all 32 bollards! They now look as good as new! There was even time for a spot of weeding. Thanks to everyone who came along to help.

Many thanks to the Canal & Rivers Trust(CRT) for supporting the group with materials and paint brushes.
